Opening Reception: Moving Visuals

David C. Driskell Center for the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora Thursday, September 13, 2018 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Moving Visuals is the first exhibition of time-based media works to be organized and presented at the David C. Driskell Center in its seventeen-year history. All of the seven selected artists, Sanford Biggers, Stephanie Dinkins, Lyle Ashton Harris, Clifford Owens, Karina Aguilera Skvirsky, Jefferson Pinder, and Hank Willis Thomas are using time-based media to explore issues of “blackness,” e.g. identity, masculinity, power, culture, migration, and more. Through the use of video, these artists engage their audience to tell unique stories ranging from immigration to Artificial Intelligence promoting contemporary dialogue about history, culture, and identity. This exhibition includes eleven works that date from 2010 to 2018; some works, or installations, have been created specifically for this exhibition and are being shown here for the first time.During the exhibition opening Vanessa Jagodinsky will perform a durational performance titled Consume (contains nudity), an exploration of her own sense of displaced identity; she invites the audience to participate in the performance.
