Opening Reception: Portraits of Who We Are
There are relatively few exhibitions of self-portraits by African American artists; this exhibition has been developed to address the ways in which African American artists portray themselves, their communities, and their culture. Portraits provide the viewing audience with documentation of the existence of the subject and the cultural and social setting, while revealing multiple aspects of a deeper view of our collective human evolution and shared humanity. This exhibition also includes several self-portraits by living, practicing artists, who have been commissioned by the Center to create works that will be accessioned into the Driskell Center’s permanent art collection. In conjunction with Portraits of Who We Are, the David C. Driskell Center will host a symposium on African American Artists and self-portraiture. More details are forthcoming.
