David C. Driskell's Ceramics, with Gabriel Reed

November 19, 2020

Few people know that David C. Driskell was a prolific ceramicist. Watch as Gabriel Reed examines and discusses Driskell's ceramics, with remarks from Dorit Yaron and Professor Curlee R. Holton.

About Gabriel Reed

Gabriel Reed is a PhD Candidate in Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in Visual Arts. Gabriel is a Kansas City, Missouri-based multidisciplinary artist and philosopher, employing both practice and theory to investigate and (re)imagine the workings of ceramics in contemporary culture. His research focuses on how we are able to understand our fundamental sense of ceramics, an activation of material imagination transfigured through clay and fire.

Through ceramics, photography, drawing, burning and writing, Gabriel seeks to expand the discourse of good clay in art and ecology, encouraging a deeper and more nuanced understanding of how ceramics, imagination, and nature intersect. He is particularly interested in organic firing methods, for their engagement in traditionally situated knowledges of phenomenology and materiality.

Gabriel received his BFA in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri and an MFA in Ceramics from Bowling Green State University, in OH; he is currently serving as Director of Education for Via International.
