[Un]Common Collections:

Selections from Fifteen Collectors

Thursday, September 19th - Friday, November 22nd 2019

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 19th 2019

[Un]Common Collections includes 64 works spanning from 1860 to 2018 selected from the collections of dedicated collectors of African American art. The curators, Professor Curlee R. Holton and Dorit Yaron, respectively the Center’s Director and Deputy Director, selected four works from each collection focusing on diversity in mediums, styles, periods, subject matters, and themes.

By showcasing selected works from those collections, the Driskell Center hopes to highlight each collector’s approach to collecting, explore each collector’s legacy, and encourage others, especially young collectors, to follow their example.

A brochure highlights each collector and collection, including a short description of the collection and the reasons/motivations behind its assemblage.

On Thursday, October 24th from 5-7PM, the Driskell Center will host a panel discussion in conjunction with the [Un]Common Collections Exhibition. The goal of the panel is to hear the collectors featured in this exhibition discuss their collections; how they began collecting, their motivations behind collecting, and what they collect and why. The panel discussion will be led and moderated by Professor Curlee R. Holton, the Driskell Center’s Director.

The Driskell Center Gallery’s hours are Monday through Friday from 11AM to 4PM with extended hours on Wednesday until 6PM. The Driskell Center Gallery will additionally be open on the select Saturdays: September 21st, October 12th, and November 9th. The gallery will be closed on Friday, September 27th. The Driskell Center observes all University of Maryland closings due to inclement weather and holidays. The David C. Driskell Center office is open daily during the weekdays from 8:30AM through 4:30PM.
